NUVIEW is revolutionizing the Earth Observation industry by deploying the first commercial satellites designed to annually map the planet's entire land surface with LiDAR. NUVIEW's data will elevate global capabilities and transform what is possible for mankind to know about the Earth.

Job Description: Mechanical Design Engineer

We are a rapidly growing startup seeking a Mechanical Engineer with a minimum of 7 years of experience to spearhead the mechanical development of our innovative space LiDAR system at our new office in Berlin. In this role, you will primarily work on an ESA-sponsored project for a LiDAR system to map the Moon's surface with LiDAR. You will collaborate with a multidisciplinary team, both in Berlin and in the United States, to design a novel LiDAR system, leveraging existing designs for NUVIEW's Earth-mapping LiDAR, focusing on the mechanical and optical structure of the system and its interface with the satellite bus. The role is expected to extend over the full lifecycle of the system, from preliminary design, to detailed design, to AIT, and implementation. You will work closely with electrical and optical designers, thermal analysts, systems engineers, and various other engineering disciplines. This position demands proficiency in mechanical engineering tasks related to design, analysis, documentation, fabrication, assembly, and qualification of products in compliance with strict technical, schedule, and process requirements. Strong preference will be given to candidates with experience in space, opto-mechanical design, and LiDAR design.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the mechanical design of a space LiDAR payload from conceptualization through hardware build, AIT, and deployment.
  • Perform the mechanical engineering activities related to the design, analysis, documentation, processing, fabrication, assembly and qualification of the LiDAR payload with stringent technical, schedule, and process requirements.
  • Use CAD packages to design mechanical components, including optical benches, actuation mechanisms, opto-mechanical systems, and packaging for electrical components such as circuit cards, connectors, and harnessing.
  • Collaborate closely with technicians during the assembly, integration and testing of the LiDAR system.
  • Lead the vibrational and acoustic space qualification campaign, and provide support for the TVAC campaign.
  • Work closely with cross-functional teams in the development of the LiDAR system, including mission analysis, systems engineering, optical and thermal engineering, and software.
  • Develop critical design documentation to support the project, including architecture documents, ICDs, assembly procedures, V&V procedures, etc.
  • Develop internal processes and documentation to help shape the company as it grows.
  • Participate in the generation of technical content for bids, including scope capture, requirements development, materials pricing, and labor estimates as required
  • Interact with outside vendors to source parts.
  • Maintain close communication with the satellite bus providers to ensure interfaces between the LiDAR and the spacecraft.
  • Provide inputs to relevant design documentation, including ICDs, design descriptions, testing and operations procedures, etc.
  • Generate material for all design reviews (PDR, CDR, MRR, FRR, etc.).
  • Provide inputs (material and labor estimates) for Requests for Proposals (RFPs).

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering and minimum 7 years of prior relevant experience or a Graduate Degree (MS/PhD) and a minimum of 5 years of prior related experience
  • Demonstrated CAD experience, Solidworks, Fusion, Catia, etc.
  • Experience with mechanical/opto-mechanical design for space applications.
  • Experience leading space qualification campaigns.
  • Experience generating system-level requirements and translating those requirements into design specifications.
  • Knowledge about finite element analysis, resonant modes of structures, lightweight design, lightweight materials choices, as well as deformation under age and thermal loading.
  • Highly desired to have experience in opto-mechanical design and designing the mechanical structure around high precision optics.
  • Knowledge of the standards ASME Y14.5M-1994 and GD&T.
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in MS Office suite.

Preferred Additional Skills:

  • Experience with thermal engineering.
  • Design for Manufacturability and Assembly (DFM/DFMA) experience.
  • Experience with machined part design.
  • Experience with CFRP design.
  • Experience with EVMS cost and schedule practices.
